A number of other municipalities have already adopted similar programs, with city councillor Shelby Ch'ng, noting Thunder Bay should follow suit.
The splash pad was announced as part of the 2021 city budget, said Coun. Shelby Ch'ng, who represents the Northwood ward.
Coun. Shelby Ch'ng, whose Northwood ward includes the conservatory, said she anticipates majority support to renew the amenity on Monday.
“The walking tour app has been an amazing highlight of the committee’s accomplishments over the past year. It is something that can be enjoyed by both visitors and locals. Ch’ng says over time, the roundabout will save city taxpayers money.
“It’s a symbol of Thunder Bay moving forward and understanding that diversity is going to be a major factor … in our community.”
"This past year has been quite a disappointment for celebrations. It's been really difficult to organize anything we feel like we deserve. But, you know, the things that we have been able to do are actually feeling pretty good right now," said Ch'ng.
Coun. Shelby Ch’ng, whose Northwood ward encompasses the intersection, said it was one way the city could make good on a commitment under its Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Strategy to “collaborate on new place-making initiatives and opportunities for welcoming spaces in the city.”
'For so long we used old tools to do new jobs'
Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch'ng plans to table a resolution in council chambers later this month with the aim of requiring payday loan businesses to put up signs showing the equivalent annual interest rate for the fees they charge for loans.
Ch’ng was awarded the first-ever Enterprising Women Alumni Award this week from the Paro Centre for Enterprising Women.
“It’s a huge improvement for walkability and accessibility in our neighbourhood,” Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch’ng said.
The motion to do away with the proposed cut was tabled by Coun. Shelby Ch'ng, whole told CBC News the committee's efforts all around the city are important.
The winners for the northwest include four Thunder Bay women: Carolyne Leroux of Bombardier Transportation, Lynne Landry-Rody of Threads In Time, Shelby Ch'ng of Unveiled Bridal Boutique, and Margaret Philips of the Northern Woman's Bookstore.
A proposed youth transitional housing facility on Junot Avenue that has generated both support and opposition from people living the area will go ahead.
City administrators told council they could not yet reveal the locations of the new centres, but said that they are in "high need areas" and that the city is very close to finalizing arrangements for them.
Council unanimously voted to support Northwood Coun. Shelby Ch'ng's motion to add $160,000 to Clean, Green and Beautiful's budget. The restoration will be funded through the Renew Thunder Bay fund and will not impact the 2017 municipal budget levy.
